The Wood of Ones Own & The Journey Through
- Nicola Atkinson/ NADFLY artist & curator was appointed by the Aberdeenshire Council and the Forestry Commission Scotland in February 2011 for the Huntly Woodlands Public Realm Project, and invited UrbanPioneers on this community engagement project for the Battlehill Wood & Meadows Plantation with the main outcome being a Huntly Woodlands Public Art & Site Plan and to create a new Huntly Woodlands User Group.
The Public Art Plan for the Huntly Woods is a flexible approach, which reflects the nature of the many activities and people in Huntly. Although in order to create a complete public art plan the need of the HIGH & LOW User Groups as well as Huntly’s residents input and creativity is needed so the plan can, or maybe always be in development. This plan should be seen as a guide and inspire discussion.
Within the woods many varied activities take place and personal stories and memories are attached to them. To keep these relationships alive as well as nurturing them we have given names and meanings to the paths, gates and places at Battlehill Woods and Meadow Plantation. By naming the physical elements of the woods it gives a framework to the fluid, temporary and manyfold activities taking place. This encourages awareness of everyday activities as well as the woods themselves, gives a starting point for new activities or it might stir memories and ideas when taking a walk through the woods. The names will be visible at the entrances, on waymarkers, gates, bridges, seats and other elements found within the woods.
