As additional housing is required on the Isle of Eigg the client commissioned to explore the feasibility of community-owned rural housing. Through community consultation the Sam Foster Architects explored the location and style of the required housing for the allocated site.
Having established the preferred location of the proposed four detached houses UrbanPioneers developed a strategy that placed the buildings in best location within the site. Consideration had to be given to the topography and geology, with slopes, knolls and rocks across the site, as well as to the orientation and wind exposure.
The location and orientation of the buildings was guided to maximise solar gain and wind protection, creating semi-private and private spaces, access and circulation as well as making most of the beautiful views across the island.
In addition tree planting has been proposed to connect the housing to the wider landscape and topography but also to maximise wind protection and shelter.
