North Edinburgh Arts Garden
- As the arts centre expands, the surrounding garden is being thoughtfully reimagined to create a stronger connection between the building and the landscape. While parts of the existing garden are being retained, the area closest to the centre has been redesigned around a new, organically shaped path that gently draws visitors from the building into the wider garden. Along this route, a sequence of spaces of varying sizes creates moments for discovery, play, gathering, reflection and informal activities, offering visitors a rich variety of experiences throughout the garden.
The new garden responds to climate change by collecting rainwater, enhancing biodiversity and reusing existing materials wherever possible. It has also been designed as an inclusive, family-friendly place where the community can connect with nature, enjoy flexible outdoor spaces and discover opportunities for future artworks and changing activities.
The main path provides accessible access to the higher garden area at the rear. Its flowing form creates pockets of interest along the route, while a cobbled drainage channel helps manage surface water by guiding run-off towards a new pond at the lowest point of the site.
The area beside the building has been resurfaced to allow indoor activities to spill naturally outdoors. The existing sandpit has been reinstated alongside amenity grass and seating, creating a welcoming place for play, rest and socialising across all ages.
The existing play mound, complete with tunnel, slide and stone boulders, has been reconfigured to support a larger informal play area. Between the different activity zones, planting beds form soft, informal boundaries, bringing texture, seasonal colour and habitat value into the garden.
Within the retained garden area, existing paths have been upgraded and new raised planters and a composting area have been introduced, supporting hands-on gardening activities and encouraging continued community involvement.
